Dream State is a world between reality and fantasy, a limbo state you do not want to wake up from, like that warm fuzzy feeling you have when you are on vacation. Your happy place.
Each piece has elements specifically chosen to evoke certain emotion bringing you back to that wonderful state regardless of where you currently are. I let my adventure bug guide me when sourcing for material. The majority is collected during my visits back home to Tahiti or along my travels discovering new worlds. Every detail has a personal touch especially the wood accents as I hand polished and waxed every piece. A little bit about me: I am a collage of gathered memories and endless adventures. Every culture has something irresistible worth holding on to. No one should have to choose between their favorite flavors, or feel obligated to focus all their attention in one area of interest. There is always a way to harmonize different elements. When I see something amazing, whether it is the craftsmanship, the design, the function, or simply the color, it wakes something inside of me that wants to take possession of it and make it my own. Prints and colors are my weaknesses, I can never settle for just one or the other, so I end up mixing everything as I see fit. So much so friends and family rest their case and simply say "it's just Carol". This pull from all directions may stem from my childhood. Born in Dallas Texas but raised on the magical island of Raiatea, I grew up under the French education system, but inherited Chinese familial traditions surrounded by Tahitian culture, and perhaps watched a tad too much of American television. At a young age I longed for the city life in the US of A and now that I am based in New York City, the very definition of concrete jungle, I find myself reminiscing about elements of island lifestyle. Today I am co-owner, teacher, and costume designer of a Tahitian dance company in the Big Apple called Lei Pasifika. I share my life adventures with an Ecuadorian stallion, whom I met on one random night at the Bulgarian Club. We live in Chinatown. Growing up I had so many interests, from dance to cooking to traveling to ecology to, I dare say, some psychology. It was and still is impossible to choose only one area of focus. I have this never-ending desire to travel the world because I want to experience so many different cultures. I’ve even dreamt of a wedding where we would serve an array of all my favorite traditional foods and participate in as many celebratory rituals as possible simply because I want an excuse to gather as many friends and cultures possible under one roof for a huge party. Sounds silly but wouldn’t it be amazing? So, my take on life is “why can’t we have it all?” Of course we can! Life if is a journey made of experiences slammed together by choices we make and people we meet along the way. Why do we feel the need to define ourselves if it only limits our potential? Dream State is a toast to shining in so many different ways. |
